For example, did you know James Brown spent 3 years in prison for threatening pedestrians with firearms while high on PCP?

It’s the classic case of genius that self destructs into malignity. It’s easy to give respect when considering what he has done for music, but, in most cases his dark persona proceeds him.

What really stands out among electronic musicians is that he worked with some of the most innovative, funky drummers of the 1900s. One of those drummers, Clyde Stubblefield, is said to be the most sampled musician EVER. It’s clear that the signature sound of funk and soul was shaped by these performers.

The sound of many other new genres still echo with bits and pieces of James Brown’s music, from drum and bass to hip hop. Here is a nice little holiday treat for our readers, a small collection of James Brown breakbeats, grunts and funky yells that truly have been sampled to death. Enjoy and have a happy holiday. RIP James Brown.

The volume of the samples aren’t maximized / normalized so they won’t scare the hell out of you when you have the volume up really loud on your computer. There are 12 alert sounds and 4 separate login and logout sounds. More coming soon!

To change the sounds for Gaim, do the following. It’s quite easy.

1. In the Buddy List window, press CTRL + P or select Tools > Preferences.
2. Select the tab Sounds.
3. Highlight a sound event and click the choose button.

At Blue Distortion, we’ve gone frog crazy! Here is a small tribute of electronic media to our little green friends. First, we have some sound samples packs. The first is of a plethora of frogs going through random rhythms. This was sampled in the late summer of 2005. The second sample pack is processed one hits from the first pack.

Sorry for the lack of updates in the last couple of months, our server got the Avian Flu. It’s got better, though. I got to sample an Alesis Micron a few weeks ago. The Micron is an 8 polyphony synthesizer which uses the ION analog-modeling sound engine. It has a nice lofi sound. The presets are a combination of Korg MS2000 style strings and techno drum arpeggiations. Nice little synth for the price, but, would prefer more knobs.

Here are a couple of sample packs which can also be found on the sound samples page. The first sample pack consists of edited drum hits from drum loops on the Micron. The second is a mix of dirty electronic growls.

Also, here are a few photographs from an upcoming feature on the site, Electronic Music Photography. These were taken with the Canon 20D DSLR. The first photograph is the SL-Q212: a fairly rare and old Technics turntable. The other photos are headphones and homemade patchcords. Stay tuned for more photography and sample packs.

Today, we are going to teach you how to recreate a different version of this sound using common household items. Well, more common than the old projector and television set. The items you will need for this sound experiment is an electric shaver and a water jug (the big ones used in water coolers).

Here is a quick sample of the sound effect. That’s the source sample with no editing or eq work. To get the best audio signal, try placing the microphone right above the opening of the water bottle pointing down. You can adjust this as you begin recording and checking levels. You will have to hold the water jug off the ground. Letting it rest on the ground will decrease the amplitude and muffle the higher harmonics of the sound.

Take the electric shaver and place it against the water bottle’s side towards the bottom. For the best effect, keep the shaver parallel to the ground. You will have to press the shaver hard against the water bottle to create more of the low frequency hum versus the harsh sound of a shaver hitting plastic. Ok, the harsh sound is really nice and dirty; maybe that could be used as well.

Experiment with the placement of the shaver and you will capture far more strange sounds than just the lightsaber-like effects. For example, try placing the shaver directly underneath the jug. Also, try using different items like oil pans and plastic bowls. Use the pictures below as a guide for placement and micing arrangements. Stay tuned for sample packs from this session.

On September 1, 2005, Propellerhead Software annouced that the era or ReBirth had come to an end and create the Rebirth Museum to commemorate its history. Visitors are welcome to tour the website, learn about it’s developers and community, and take home a special memento: ReBirth RB 338- itself!

You will have to register for the site to get to the download page. When this program was initially offered for download, the servers where crawling to a halt because of all the traffic. A day later there was torrent files uploaded and these are the official ones from Propellerhead.
